Type Locality and Naming

Established by the Compilation Team of the Regional Stratigraphic Table of Liaoning Province in 1978, and age is Oligocene. The naming section is well Lao 55-11 section at Gengjiajie, North Laohutai, Fushun coalfield, Liaoning.


Lithology and Thickness

Sequence of brown, thick-bedded shale with small amounts of variegated, thin-bedded sandstone, fine sandstone, shale and green mudstone. The thickness is 110–338 m.

Relationships and Distribution

Lower contact

It was deposited continuously with the underlying Eocene Xilutian Fm.

Upper contact

Unconformable contact with the overlying Quaternary. Next younger regional is Yanghe Fm.

Regional extent

This formation is distributed in wells in the vicinity of Gengjialie, Fushun coalfield, Liaoning.

Fossils

The sporopollen assemblage displays marked similarities and continuity with the Xilutian Formation. The assemblage is dominated by pollen of angiosperms, of which the mid-late Eocene Sangou Quercoidites content is highest and next comes Ulmipollenites, and in addition there are also Taxidoiaceaepollenites and Ephedripites.


Age 

It has the character of the Eocene sporopollen assemblage in Northeast China; so it is advisable to define its age as Eocene.
